Lady of the English was written as part of the ‘Plays Without Decor’ initiative supported and funded by The Noel Coward Foundation and Wilton’s Music Hall. Lady of the English explores the choices Empress Matilda faced when her father Henry I died. Did those choices lead to her cousin Stephen seizing the thrown of England, and the subsequent seventeen year ‘Anarchy’ that tore the country apart?
